Meet Freedom House Initiative (FHI), which collaborates with ORAM’s short‑term housing program to provide safe, dignified shelter to displaced LGBTIQ people. Through an apartment the organization rents, four LGBTIQ refugees live with support to rebuild their lives — access to essentials, community, and stability.

Last week, ORAM’s team visited their apartment and met three clients: a trans woman from Uganda, a trans man from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a trans woman from an undisclosed location. They spoke about how the apartment has become a “healing house” — a place of belonging that many had not known in a long time.

We extend our gratitude to Freedom House Initiative for their leadership, and to all their staff who make this work possible. Together, we’re building a path to safety and inclusion for trans and queer refugees in Kenya.

Meet Joan and Vanessa — two LGBTIQ refugees from Colombia now living in Mexico City. Together, they founded @poesiapintadaoficial, an LGBTIQ refugee-owned business specializing in graphic design, illustration, and art therapy workshops.

ORAM proudly partnered with them to bring art therapy to 24 LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers, fostering healing and connection through creativity.

Despite their dedication to uplifting others, Joan and Vanessa’s own lives have been turned upside down. Their home was damaged in a flood, they’ve endured physical violence, and they are struggling to meet basic food and healthcare needs.

Andry Hernández Romero, a gay asylum seeker from Venezuela, was sent from El Salvador’s CECOT prison and returned to Venezuela, his legal team confirmed.

In March, U.S. authorities transferred him during a scheduled asylum appointment and held him in CECOT for 125 days — without giving him a hearing.

Today, on International Non-Binary People’s Day, we’re honoring the strength and resilience of nonbinary refugees like Riley*.

Riley, a nonbinary refugee from Rwanda living in Nairobi, shared with us the discrimination they face daily—being denied services, struggling to find safe work, and facing harassment because of their gender identity.

Through ORAM’s Digital Learning Center, part of our Economic Empowerment program, Riley gained digital skills that now enable them to work from home safely and independently.

📍 In May, ORAM hosted Stakeholder Consortium II in Berlin, a dynamic convening focused on advancing LGBTIQ inclusion in forced displacement across Central and Eastern Europe. 🌈🌍

The event brought together 52 participants from 41 organizations, including refugee-led organizations, grassroots and community-based organizations, LGBTIQ advocacy groups, INGOs, UN agencies, independent researchers, activists and donors. Participants joined from across the region, including Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Moldova, Czechia, Germany, France, and more.

Over two days, we explored a range of pressing topics:

📝 Centering refugee-led leadership and participation
📊 Strengthening inclusive and ethical research practices

Ariane is Director of Investor Relations at the END Fund, where she leads North American institutional giving and builds partnerships with visionary philanthropists, foundations, and corporations. For over 15 years, she’s helped NGOs and UN agencies advance their fundraising, communications, and strategy efforts across four continents.

She began her career in publishing before transitioning into international development in 2008. Ariane holds an MSc in Religious Studies from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in Political Science from McGill University.

Originally from New York City, she now lives in Ottawa with her spouse, children, and a growing crew of pets.

Their work explores how liberation emerges through Black and queer creative expression — examining the relationship between knowledge and power, innovation and injustice.

With roots in Jamaica and driven by a deep commitment to global justice, Earl brings both personal insight and academic vision to their advocacy. We’re honored to have their voice and leadership guiding ORAM’s mission.

With over 15 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, Paul brings a deep understanding of fundraising, strategy, and community engagement. He has also led efforts across immigrant justice, sustainable agriculture, and civic advocacy and worked at Immigration Equality supporting LGBTIQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers.

Paul’s leadership and voice will be vital as ORAM continues to advocate for LGBTIQ asylum seekers around the world.

Meet Franklin, a gay refugee from Honduras now residing in Mexico City. Through his participation in ORAM's focus groups, Franklin co-created our Guide for LGBTIQ Refugees in Mexico City, offering invaluable insights to support others on similar journeys.

A few years ago, Franklin survived a brutal attack that left him disabled, causing chronic pain and making it difficult to find employment. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to rebuild his life and achieve independence.

At ORAM, we are committed to empowering LGBTIQ refugees like Franklin by providing tools and resources to help them thrive.

At ORAM, this day holds deep significance for us. As one of the first organizations dedicated to protecting forcibly displaced LGBTIQ individuals, we work every day to provide those fleeing violence and persecution with the resources and tools to rebuild their lives — with the support of a global community behind them.

This year’s IDAHOBIT theme, “The Power of Communities,” comes at a critical moment. With resettlement paused and international aid disappearing, it’s community that keeps hope alive — and drives real change.

ORAM’s global team chose to spotlight some of the partners who walk beside us in this work — community organizations around the world who help protect, empower, and advocate for LGBTIQ refugees in extraordinary ways.
